Translating physical surface samples into production-ready digital materials requires a balance between technical precision and workflow efficiency. During my internship at Letink Design, I helped manage a large-scale material pipeline: converting raw capture data into high-resolution PBR textures.
Here is a look at the workflow and the automation tools I developed:
PBR Texture Processing & Tiling
- Converted raw image captures into complete PBR map sets (Albedo, Normal, Roughness, Height, and AO) across 2K, 4K, and 8K resolutions.
- Digitized and managed over 300+ individual material samples.
- Utilized Substance Designer, Photoshop, and AI-assisted pattern tools like Nano Banana, Gemini and Photoshop AI to remove seams, clean edge artifacts, and build clean, tileable procedural variations.
Custom Python Automation (Substance Designer)
- Identified a major bottleneck in manual file loading and built a custom Python script in Substance Designer to automate the import pipeline.
Pipeline Organization & Efficiency Boost
- Built a comprehensive data-tracking system in Excel to monitor material codes, render statuses, camera passes, and delivery milestones.
- This organized tracking framework reduced file management preventing duplicate renders and keeping complex asset deliveries on schedule.
A special thank you to Tanya Schrijver, Farbod Toorani, and Raphael Trischler for their support and guidance throughout this material scanning and digitizing workflow! Working alongside them to streamline data tracking and solve complex setup bottlenecks made managing such a large asset volume a smooth and rewarding experience.
